About the Town of Hudson

The rich history of Hudson, Massachusetts, traces back to its roots in the late 17th century. In 1698, John Barnes, an early settler, arrived and was granted land within the Indian Plantation, which had recently become part of Marlborough's territory. Over the ensuing decades, the small community began to take shape, eventually adopting the name Feltonville by the mid-1800s.

However, it was the advent of the Industrial Revolution in the 1850s that truly transformed the landscape of Hudson. With the arrival of railways and the establishment of factories, the town experienced rapid growth and development. Notably, during the tumultuous years of the Civil War, Hudson played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, aiding escaped slaves on their journey t0 freedom.

As the 1860s progressed, the community sought formal recognition and autonomy, leading to its incorporation as a town. In honor of John Hudson, a prominent local figure renowned for his contributions to the town, including funding the establishment of the Hudson Library, the newly formed municipality proudly adopted the name Hudson, a title that continues to resonate through the annals of its storied history.
