About the Town of Bedford

Bedford, Massachusetts, boasts a rich history dating back to its settlement in 1642. Initially established around an Algonquian Indian trading post known as the Shawsheen House, the town grew steadily over the years. It was officially incorporated in 1729, taking its name from Bedford, England, a nod to the heritage of some of its early settlers.

The Bedford Economy

Throughout its history, Bedford's economy has been closely tied to research and engineering, particularly in the realm of high technology. The town serves as home to several significant institutions in this field, including Hanscom Air Force Base, which functions as an electronics research center for both the military and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
